Automobiles -Boon or Curse

Automobiles play a great role in our life, these are the easiest and comfortable mode of transportation in this world, thus are the boon of our life.

But the same boon has created a problem for mankind and his environment by polluting the nature, the air. Automobile use fuels produces exhaust (emissions).

Exhaust from the automobile (which runs on internal combustion engine) contains the following harmful gases (pollutants) which contribute in air pollution are:

     - Carbon-dioxide,

     - Carbon monoxide,

     -Unburned hydrocarbons (fuels),

     -Nitrogen (NOx),

     -And other particulate emissions.

Among the above Carbon- monoxide is a very harmful emission gas which is extremely toxic, which is formed due to incomplete combustion of the fuel. It is a colorless, odorless, poisonous, when breathed even in small quantities can be lethal as it robs oxygen carried by human blood cells and may even lead to death. This in medical terms is called as ‘Carbonyl hemoglobinae’.

Hence to control the emissions from the automobiles and limit them to a certain percentage “Emission Norms” are built.

Emission norms when followed strictly can reduce the percentage of pollutants released by automobiles and hence will affect the environment to a lesser extent and air pollution can be controlled or lessened to a certain extent.

All automobile manufacturers manufacture their vehicles according to the emission norms. But after when the costumer starts using the vehicles, along the time due to long run of the engines the efficiency of the engine goes on deviating from the prescribed Emission Norms, thus increasing the pollutants, thus increasing the pollutant hence increasing the pollutant hence increasing the AIR POLLUTION’.

Preventive Measures:-

Exhaust gases produced by combustion of fuel contains harmful substance such as carbon-monoxide, hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulphur etc.; which have to be reduced. Petrol has some contains of lead which causes air pollution, which is cured by using Unleaded Petrol.

The efficiency of combustion process and of the emission control system can be determined by analyzing the exhaust gases and measuring the level of hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulphur, water, carbon-dioxide etc;.

A test instrument called “Exhaust gas analyzer” measures the chemical content of the exhaust gas, which will detect excessive emissions caused by problems in fuel metering, catalytic converters, logged air filter etc;.

If every individual takes care of his vehicle, services it regularly, corrects the faulty parts and runs his vehicle according to Emission Norms he can create a positive  impact an the problem of air pollution.

If crores of vehicles can create air pollution those same vehicles can be correct and air pollution can be reduced. Now it’s in our hands whether to use the automobiles as boon or as a curse on the health, curse on environment.

It is in our hands, and only we can make this world a better place to LIVE, a better place to BREATHE …..
